This six week live online course is designed for learners who are completely new to Twi and want to begin speaking with confidence while building a foundation in pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, sentence formation, and Ghanaian culture.

About This Course

Twi Foundations I: Akwaaba is the starting point for learners with little to no previous Twi experience.

 

Students begin with the Akans of Ghana, the Twi alphabet, foundational sounds, and pronunciation before progressively building vocabulary, grammar, sentence formation, listening, and conversational skills.

 

Lessons combine cultural understanding, pronunciation, numbers, nouns, pronouns, verbs, basic tense formation, vocabulary, sentence building, and guided speaking practice.

 

The goal is not simply to memorize Twi words or grammar rules. Students will begin learning how to understand, respond, build sentences, and communicate.

Week 1 | Akwaaba

Begin with the Akans of Ghana and the cultural foundation of Twi. Explore the Twi alphabet, foundational sounds, pronunciation patterns, greetings, and your first useful expressions.


Week 2 | Greetings, Numbers & Nouns

Build on your first expressions with everyday greetings and responses while learning Akan numbers and useful beginner nouns.


Week 3 | Me, You & Everyday Actions

Learn beginner pronouns and common Twi verbs, begin introducing yourself and talking about everyday actions, and discover how these words work together in the present tense.


Week 4 | Asking, Answering & Building Sentences

Practice asking and answering beginner questions, strengthen sentence formation using familiar vocabulary, and receive an introduction to expressing actions in the past tense.


Week 5 | The Human Body & Daily Life

Expand your vocabulary through the human body and everyday life while combining familiar nouns, pronouns, verbs, and expressions into increasingly complete beginner sentences.


Week 6 | Kasa Twi

Bring everything together through revision, sentence formation, listening practice, guided conversation, and a final opportunity to use the Twi you have built throughout the course.

Your Course Study Guide
A Foundation of the Twi Language of Ghana

Students will receive A Foundation of the Twi Language of Ghana guide as a course resource.

 

The guide provides an extensive Twi reference covering foundational material including the alphabet, numbers, nouns, pronouns, verbs, and vocabulary students will encounter as they begin building sentences.

 

Because this is an Absolute Beginners BL1A course, students are not expected to memorize the entire guide before attending class.

Instead, selected vocabulary and language points from the guide will support each week's lesson and give students clear material to review between live sessions.

The study guide supports the live instruction. Each week, students can focus on material connected to that lesson and then use it during pronunciation, explanation, sentence building, listening, and speaking practice.
