Oríkì & Orisha: Language of Praise and Power
Pre-registration for Spring 2026 is now open.

Description:
Yoruba is a language layered with honor, history, and identity. In this beginner friendly sample class, learners will explore the structure and spirit of Yoruba greetings, used to show respect, build community, and mark time of day. We introduce foundational expressions such as “Bawo ni?” (How are you?) and culturally-rooted ways to greet elders, family members, and peers. You’ll also be introduced to Oríkì; oral praise poetry used to call forth the identity, achievements, and lineage of a person. Yoruba is not only spoken but it is deeply felt.  This is a 6 week program that meets one time a week.

Students can expect a calm, interactive session designed to welcome those new to the language. There will be space to repeat words aloud, ask questions, and gain confidence speaking directly with a native teacher. This session offers an open door into the Yoruba language through structure, sound, and tradition. Whether you’re exploring personal heritage or starting something new, this class provides a meaningful entry point into one of Africa’s most culturally preserved languages.

What You will Learn:

• Foundational Yoruba greetings and expressions

• Practical conversation and pronunciation tools (practice speaking)

• Nigerian cultural insights and storytelling

• Confidence building activities in a small group setting

• Guidance on how to keep learning after the course ends

This class is ideal for adult beginners or language lovers looking to explore Yoruba and learn more about our culture.
